Other than in the USA, UK and Australia you generally need to apply for your passport or visa in person.

There are several very good and not too expensive visa and passport services in the USA and UK who will perform all the unpleasant tasks such as standing in the queues for you in return for a nominal fee. The main advantage of using these services (besides not having to wake up early and spend the whole day queuing) is that they will ensure all forms and all supporting documentation is correct which will help ensure your application is processed without delay.

Backpackers Tip: Before you apply for a travel / entry visa be certain you are going to visit that country. Visa's are both rather expensive and time limited so if you are uncertain of your exact travel plans rather apply only for a visa to enter the first country on your itinerary. Once there and you are able to make definite travel plans for your next sector apply for that visa in the country you are visiting.
